O'Neill

H. Katherine (Kit) O'Neill, Ph.D.

Dr. O'Neill earned her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of North Dakota in 1991, and completed her clinical internship at the Medical University of South Carolina.  She currently is on faculty as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at North Dakota State University .  She also maintains a part-time private practice with Knowlton, O'Neill, and Associates.

Dr. O'Neill has a special interest in the psychological effects of traumatic events, especially natural disasters.  For the past 14 years, she has been a disaster mental health instructor and responder for the Ame ric an Red Cross. Dr. O'Neill has served on seven national Red Cross disaster operations, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and numerous local disasters. She received the “Exceptional Volunteer” award from the Minn-Kota (Fargo-Moorhead) Chapter of the American Red Cross in 1999.

In 2002, Dr. O'Neill served as consultant on a public education campaign for the Ame ric an Psychological Association which focused on building resilience in response to disaster and terrorism, and provided commentary for the Discovery Health Channel documentary, “Aftermath: The Road to Resilience”. Currently, she is a member of the APA's Disaster Response Network Advisory Committee.

Dr. O'Neill has conducted research on the impact of the Devils Lake and Red River floods in North Dakota , and the benefits of written emotional disclosure following Hur ric ane Floyd in North Carolina. She is currently conducting research, in collaboration with Dr. George Youngs, which examines resilience in rural communities affected by the1997 Red River flood.  In addition to her interest in disaster and resilience, Dr. O'Neill teaches and conducts research in the areas of addictive behaviors and anxiety disorders.  She has numerous scholarly publications and professional presentations.
